Writing from life can be a tricky business. There are people to protect, faulty memories of events, and the pitfalls of self-censorship. In this workshop, we will employ techniques of poetry and fiction to create works of Memoir and Autobiographical Fiction. Through original writing exercises, we will learn literary techniques including character, dialogue, setting and story arc. In our writing, we will draw upon both the truths and lies of our experience because our lives are too rich not to write about and our imaginations too strong to ignore.

This is generative class. All levels of writers are welcome. This workshop is open to BIPOC writers only. Tuition for the course is $550/Gift Price is 500.

Five Monday Nights on Zoom from 7-9 PM EST: February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 3

A Furious Blooming: Writing into Personal and Collective Grief

When mothers are planted,
daughters begin a furious blooming.

Initiation, Kamilah Aisha Moon

Grief leaves us speechless, throws us into the depths of silence. There are never the right words to say to those who are grieving. Or to explain to others the depths of our own grief. Grief is a door we are pushed through into a new world, a world we must live in. We are never the same. How do we write from these new selves? How can we lean into our writing practice to not only survive the storms of grief, but also the storms that are unleashed in those who we grieve alongside?

In this workshop, we’ll find inspiration from writers who have broken through the boundary of wordlessness. We’ll join each other in our grief journeys, if only for a moment. Using a series of breathing/healing modalities we’ll write of our own grief, side by side, and not so alone.
